, centre college. i want to thank you, joe. it's been an honor to engage in this critical debate. we face a very big choice. what kind of country are we going to be? what kind of country are we going to give our kids? president obama, he had his chance. he made his choices. his economic agenda, more spending, more borrowing, higher taxes, a government takeover of health care. it's not working. it's failed to create the jobs we need. 23 million americans are struggling for work today. 15% of americans are in poverty. this is not what a real recovery looks like. you deserve better. mitt romney and i want to earn your support. we're offering real reforms for a real recovery for every american. mitt romney, his experience, his ideas, his solutions is uniquely qualified to get this job done. at a time when we have a jobs crisis in america, wouldn't it be nice to have a job creator in the white house? the choice is clear. a stagnant economy that promotes more government dependency, or a dynamic growing economy that promotes opportunity and jobs? mitt romney and i will not duck the tough issues.
joe biden is in complete denial when he said during the debate last night the white house had no clue the u.s. consulate in benghazi wanted more security before the deadly attack that killed the ambassador. let's get right to our first guest to talk about it. republican congressman mike rogers, chairman of the house select committee on intelligence. mr. rogers, thank you for joining me. let me ask you straight away about your reaction to this issue that's now blowing up pretty big today about what joe biden said about what was known by we, and i use the word we advisedly. let's playirst of all what was said by joe biden and by paul ryan in the debate last night. >> this is becoming more troubling by the day. they first blamed the youtube video. now they're trying to blame the romney/ryan ticket for making this an issue. >> we weren't told they wanted more security. we did not know they wanted more security. >> i was surprised when he said that, because as a viewer, watching, i was like well, hang on a second, i thought the state department had said that they received these warnings. m

the vice presidential candidates, no one had a bad night. nobody was too polite. instead joe biden, paul ryan, simply let it fly and when it was over the american people scored it a draw. cnn/orc poll of debate watchers showed that 48% felt that paul ryan won. 44% said that the vice president joe biden won. of course that would be a statistical tie when you calculate in the margin of error. we begin with cnn's dana bash with some of the highlights of the night. good morning. >> good morning. we were here. we watched it all. you really could feel the intensity of it from the beginning. all 90 minutes. it was very intense. there were some smiles and smirks on both sides. but all in all it was very substantive. these were two men who both came ready to tangle. >> world -- >> thank heavens -- >> reporter: on taxes. >> you can cut tax rates by 20% and still preserve this important preferences for middle class taxpayers. >> not mathematically possible. >> it is mathematically possible. >> on medicare. >> they just allo medicare to bargain for the cost of drugs like medicaid can, that would sav

going in from the perspective of the democrats what joe biden's aides and especially those closest to the process of them preparing was make up for the bad debate that the obama campaign knows that the president had last week. he did that and most importantly reenergizing the democratic base. that was, you know, some would argue and republicans are arguing forcefully that he did it too much that he went overboard in his reaction in making sure not to nod like the president did and on the republican side, what they wanted to make sure was that -- excuse me, paul ryan could sit on the same stage in a legitimate way with the vice president. i think that there's no question he did that. the debate that is happening right now on the twitter verse between the campaigns is what i just talked about whether or not joe biden went too far. he was rude, he was out of control and i'll bet you'll see something on saturday night live, he was doing what he had to do. >> i think you hit it on the head. that is what will show up on snl and snl had a huge impact on the presidential campaign. >> i loo

. i think you might agree with me here, that was very much so worth looking at twice. joe biden, paul ryan. they really went at it, especially biden. here he is, mr. fact check, joe biden, challenging congressman ryan on ryan's medice plan. >> this is a plan that is bipartisan. it is a plan i put together with a prominent democrat senator from oregon. >> there is not one democrat who endorses it. not one democrat who signed the plan. >> my partner is a democrat from oregon. >> he says he no longer supports your plan. >> we put it together with the former clinton budget director. >> and so it went. but now all of a sudden we have mitt romney checking joe biden's facts concerning the consulate attack in libya. and this is something you haven't yet heard. this is mitt romney speaking just a short time ago, here he is in richmond, virginia, you need to hear this. mitt romney. >> the vice president directly contradicted the sworn testimony of state department officials. he's doubling down on denial. and we need to understand exactly what happened. when the vice president of the united stat

? >> you were great. >> i don't have to do it again. >> we get a bonus for being rude. >> "morning joe" starts right now. i'm just going to go over here now to my place. >>> well, you have to hand it to mitt romney because president obama sure did. many political experts were surprised that during wednesday's debate, president obama failed to mention mitt romney's infamous 47% comment. obama elected to take the high road, forgetting that that road leads to building houses with jimmy carter. romney went on to say that if elected, he would no longer borrow money from china to pay for pbs. china funds pbs. i guess that explains why this week's "sesame street" was brought to you by the letter this. according to nielsen numbers, more than 70 million people watched wednesday's debate either on tv, online or from one of the podiums. >> good morning. it's monday, october 8th. welcome to "morning joe." with us on set, we have msnbc contributor mike barnicle, political editor and white house correspondent for "the huffington post," sam stein. and managing editor of "fortune," andy serwer. >> and
last night, one of the very first things that joe biden did when they turned toward the economy was raise the auto bailout. one out of eight jobs in ohio is tied to the auto industry, of the 88 counties in ohio, 82 have automotive related industries in those counties. that's wildly popular in ohio. the obama campaign is making the case and i think they've got the better of the argument that the governor opposed, governor romney opposed the auto bailout and that's i think an economics jobs issue that the obama people are going to continue to push. >> patrick, a good chunk of governor romney's bounce came from this rise in republican enthusiasm after the debate. if the president is able to bounce back at the next one and move the needle on democratic enthusiasm, what does that do to the romney lead? >> i think romney needs to look at this now and look at the battleground states that are the must-wins, florida and ohio, he's so centralized in boston, i would send 100 people to florida, 100 people to ohio and just start gubernatorial races for the time being because that's how you g
in the first debate and not let biden undercut it. >> geraldo: so you think that joe biden has to do something the president did not. he has to take it to his opponent? >> he is totally going to do that. not to ryan but to romney. if i were biden i would take all 45 minutes of the 90 minutes i have to attack romney both on the record and romney was wrong about the $5 trillion tax cut and doesn't do anything for the unsinced. uninsured. and raise things that obama didn't raise for whatever reason. the 47%. george w. bush was not mentioned in the debate wednesday night. bain capital. it will be a big assault both personal and in policy terms on mitt romney from joe biden. puts paul ryan in a tricky position. he would like to go on the offensive. he is good at prosecuting that record, the debt and obama care and all that but he also has to defend romney and got to lot let biden undercut what romney did on wednesday night. >> geraldo: i read something that you wrote that suggested that romney won by being moral not just matter of fact about the issues of the economy for example. what did you mean?
